Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Adrien Agreste ( "Chat Noir" )
◎ Character's Canon: Miraculous Ladybug
◎ Character's Age: Not explicitly stated (said to be around "teens"), but I'm taking him to be around 15; his other classmates are in the 14-16 age.
◎ Canon Point: As episodes air out of order, I'm just taking him after the first half of season 1 (1-13).
◎ Background/History: episode summaries and character overview.
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Nopppe.

◎ Personality:

Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by— well, okay, Adrien's not winning much of anything that he wants by daylight, but that's what superhero secret identities are for.

Originally a fifteen-year old model from Paris with a world-famous designer for a father, you might think Adrien Agreste has it all. He comes to school in a silver limo as the beautiful, perfect poster boy seen in advertisements all around the city, he's the subject of a rather sizeable fan club and owner of a personality seemingly devoid of flaws. He's accomplished but humble, never rubbing anything he owns in the face of anyone (if anything, he seems to avoid such things). He's smart (physics is his favorite subject) and focused; he’s reasonable, responsible and hardworking; he's multi-talented, taking lessons in piano, chinese and fencing in addition to his modeling work and, again, he never complains. On top of all of that, he's charismatic and somewhat shy, but not awkward, simply reserved. He's friendly and never rude, offering words of encouragement to his classmates and anyone who needs it (most notably Marinette, the titular heroine whom can't put together a complete sentence around him) regardless of his closeness to them. Honestly, everything about him seems peachy keen! Picture perfect, as it were.

It isn't, not really.

Most of Adrien's exterior is a PR dream crafted by his somewhat (very) overprotective and absent father. Adrien going along with these whims is all an attempt to please him, and every direction of his morning life is determined by a man who's never there. At his core, what Adrien craves is affection and presence from someone, along with simplicity, a lack of a pedestal and its heavy expectations. He's frustrated and saddened by his situation, along with the fact so much of his life is limited by what his father wishes, but he doesn't allow himself to show it. He strives for his father's approval and displays of affection, showcased by how much he loves the scarf that Gabriel Agreste had (supposedly) given to him, which in the end was simply his father's assistant Nathalie taking someone else's gift and pretending it had been given by Gabriel. No matter his feelings, he mostly always relents to the wishes of his father, and has somewhat become resigned and accepting to the fact that the way his life is is... just what it is.

So, despite his perfect exterior, Adrien Agreste is a bit of a pushover to his issues, and the kind of person to internalize his problems rather than boldly display them or complain, mostly due to the fact he doesn't feel like he can do much about them. There are slight slivers of rebellion and displeasure that he allows to slip on the surface once in a while, but even those are muted.

The Adrien underneath? Is about the complete opposite of muted.

Of course, it isn't like Adrien doesn't show his real self to the city at large. If anything, he purroudly displays it. As his alter-ego "Chat Noir", he's the suave, boisterous half of Paris's Superhero Duo consisting of him and Ladybug, and he never hesitates to make that fact known. With the mask and powers he's been given by his kwami, Plagg, Adrien finds he's finally allowed to say what he wants, do what he wants, and what he wants is seemingly a hell of a lot of cat puns and nicknames. There's no sense of humility in the Adrien wearing the cat ears and the skin-tight embarrassing spandex suit; there's no reservations, careful contemplation, or any sort of care at all. Chat Noir is everything amped up to 11: strength, cattitude, and energy, as he's finally left without limitations. If there's a witty comment on his tongue, he's going to say it, as not a thought should go unvoiced. Relaxed, confident, sleek is the whole package; he flexes, he stretches after avoiding potentially life-threatening attacks, and he looks unaffected by most dangerous situations, as he feels he can handle it. He's obnoxious, sometimes he tries to be, and the peak of his boasting is an attempt to impress his superheroine who he's in love with, so even superpowers can't take the "tries too hard" out of Adrien Agreste (hilariously, it's his boasting that pushes him right out of being Ladybug's type).

Not that there aren’t hints of Adrien in Chat Noir. There’s a reliability in both that can’t be denied; a sense that no matter the circumstances, they’ll try their hardest to come through, especially for those closest. And it's true. Sure, he can follow directions efficiently and without too much prompting (again, another thing he's used to as Adrien), but most notably he's absolutely willing to put himself in harm's way to protect people he cares about. Adrien, as Chat, doesn't even hesitate in taking attacks from enemies in order to ensure Ladybug's safety, and it happens various times throughout the series. Call him just a tad bit reckless and single-minded when something really important pops up, or perhaps protective to a fault. Whether you'd consider such a thing a strength or a flaw, the fact remains that, should the situation call for him to do something desperate at risk to himself, ten times out of ten he'll take the plunge. Beyond all of that, Adrien retains his honesty, and respectful behaviour, though it manifests in different ways (as Chat, he is mindful of Ladybug's choice to keep her identity a secret, despite the number of chances he had to discover it; as Adrien, it's a simple question of obeying authority and not questioning too much).

Of course, Adrien isn't all patience. It's pretty evident with Plagg, who tests him with a whole lot of relentless teasing and hiding during important times, that it's possible to get under Adrien's skin if you know what buttons to press. When he's comfortable with someone, he responds very easily to jabs with either annoyance or good-natured exasperation, though never to the point of really being mad. All in all, despite his... more eccentric points and Interesting Lifestyle Quirks (both in costume and out), Adrien is... kind of an ordinary teenage boy at the end of the day.

His puns are really bad, though.

◎ Powers/Abilities: As Adrien he's nothing too out of the ordinary, though he does have a proficiency in chinese, piano, and fencing (with the latter it can probably be assumed he's at least mildly athletic, though obviously not as athletic as he is when he's Chat Noir). Also good at modelling and being Completely Oblivious. His kwami, Plagg, combined with his Miraculous (a ring he wears on his right hand) gives him a magical girl transformation into Chat Noir. When he's utilizing Chat Noir's abilities, he's got increased strength, speed, flexibility, and is "nearly indestructible". The things obtained when fusing with the kwami include (these manifest when he transforms, and disappear when he's not transformed):

(1) The aforementioned increased physical ability (exemplified in his ability to purrkour parkour all around Paris. He also knocked a bus over with his staff one time, and ran on the walls of a building).
(2) A special gadget, which in Chat's case is an expanding silver staff. This staff can extend to basically infinite heights (Ladybug's (his partner) yoyo has been said to have infinite amounts of string); he's towered over Paris in one episode. In addition to that, the staff also has a number of technical abilities... like video/voice capability (though he's only ever called Ladybug, so it's probably limited to her), along with the ability to "zoom" like a camera and view blueprints of a building. Also a selfie stick. Basically: very high-tech, very versatile. He can also use it as a shield of sorts when he spins it at extremely high speeds.
(3) A super power. While Ladybug has "Lucky Charm", Chat has "Cataclysm" (terrible pun), which allows him to destroy absolutely anything he touches. In the show this has been shown to rust away metal beams to the point of them falling apart, break apart walls, and, while never seen, it's been said that it'd be "very bad" if this were used on a person, though the specifics of what it would do hasn't been touched on. The only downside to "Cataclysm" is that it's a one use kind of ability and, once used, Adrien only has 5 minutes (represented by the paw-pads present on his ring) before his transformation wears off.
(4) Night vision capabilities.
(5) His suit is incredibly durable, and also "practically indestructible". Considering he's been thrown across Paris and smashed into several cars without so much as a scratch or tear on his clothes.
(6) He's also got stupid superhero logic on his side, where no one really recognizes him despite him only wearing a mask over his face... Though in one episode, Alya does draw Chat Noir's clothes over a picture of Adrien, so you can probably tell they're Similar.

When his transformation wears off, Adrien can only transform again after Plagg eats cheese to restore his energy; the only time where this isn't the case is when he de-transforms when the ring slips off his finger, as that is possible. If Adrien doesn't use Cataclysm, his transformation persists for as long as he needs it.

As for Plagg, he's called a kwami, or a "quantic kami", though the full extent of what he can do without the Miraculous are unclear. Tikki, one of the other kwami, is seen to phase through objects and unlock doors from the inside out, so it can be assumed Plagg can at least do that? Though if he can be assed to do it is another story.

◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:

(1) His Miraculous. It's a plain, silver looking ring when not infused with Plagg, and a black ring with a glowing green paw-print when he's transformed.

(2) Plagg - Adrien's flying magical girl mascot companion, who's linked to his Miraculous. Plagg's entire personality is best summarized as "lazy" and "blunt"; in contrast to Marinette's more helpful and encouraging kwami, Tikki, Plagg is more often seen teasing Adrien relentlessly about his (seemingly) unrequited love for Ladybug and. Other things. Even when transforming, Adrien sometimes has to bribe Plagg to make use of his abilities, promising presents such as large amounts of cheese at the end of the day.

A bit of a grump and very spiteful, Plagg is about the opposite of what you'd expect from a cute little magical creature. He's incredibly indulgent and somewhat practical, judging from the way he chastises Adrien for respecting Ladybug's wishes to keep her identity a secret when he could've simply figured out who his dream girl was right then and there; he often eats any cheese that Adrien leaves in his bag without Adrien being aware of it, so there's no doubt he's at least a bit (very) greedy. If it's there, he'll take it, without thinking much about the consequences—not that there would be many, considering it's Adrien.

However, at the end of the day, he does seem to show at least some minuscule amounts of concern for his charge. He discusses issues affecting Adrien in some minor ways, and also encourages to take paths that would cause more personal enjoyment, even if they're not exactly the most responsible or wisest things to do at the moment. Needless to say, Plagg often causes more trouble than he solves, but considering he's connected to a power filled with "Bad Luck", what else can he do?

(3) His school bag, containing: (4) a tablet, (5) a box containing cheese.
(6) A fencing foil.
(7) His cellphone.
